What is an Alpaca??

Alpacas are a member of the camelid family. Alpacas resemble a small llama, as they are often mistaken to be llamas. Alpacas typically will reach a full grown weight of about 150 lbs., and an average height of 60-72 inches. If properly cared for, alpacas live for 20 years. They also have a lengthy gestation period of 11 months. Alpacas originated in the Andes Mountains, in South America. The first alpacas were imported from South America in 1984. There are two types of alpacas, Suri and Huacaya. The Suri has long, ropey fiber which hangs from the body. Whereas, the Huacaya has a crimped fiber which extends out from the body.
